The
Apparel Export Promotion Council, a Council sponsored by the Ministry
of Commerce, was incorporated on 22nd February, 1978, as a Company
Limited by Guarantee andLicensed under sec. 25 of Companies Act, 1956
with the object to promote, advance,increase, develope export of all
the types of readymade garments, excluding, woollen knit wear and
garments of leather, jute and hemp, to undertake all export promotion
measures, to allocate and distribute quota, to send trade delegations
and missions to foreign countries as well as to survey export potential
of readymade garments from the country, to conduct propaganda and
publicity regularly and continuously, to cooperate with Government
and other organisations in the country and abroad with the view to
further promote export of Readymade Garments and such other objects
as further elaborated in the Memorandum & Articles of Association
of the council. |

| FUNCTIONS
OF THE COUNCIL |

| Beginning from the modest
level of Rs. 125 Million during 1970-71, the exports of garments crossed
Rs. 214145 millions during 2001. |

| Export of Garments from
India to most of the Western markets has been covered by the provisions
of the Multi Fibre Arrangements since 1974. India has Bi-lateral Agreements
with USA, EEC, Canada and Norway.

| The
Council has been empowered by the Government of India to administer
the allocation of export entitlements in respect of Readymade Garments. |
| |
| The Council is actively
assisting exporters from all over the country in several ways viz.
by undertaking several activities such as: |

Exploring market and
identifies items offering export potential; |
 |
Conducting market surveys on identified
items and provides market intelligence; |
 |
Establishing contacts with the prospective
buyers to generate their interest in Indian products; |
 |
Providing library facility to members
to know latest fashion trends in world market; |
 |
Sponsoring trade-delegations, study
teams and sales-teams to market abroad; |
 |
Organizing buyer-seller meets for
selected products/group of products. |
 |
Developing new markets for existing
products; |
 |
Helping in product development and
modification to suit the needs of different markets; |
 |
Advising on International marketing; |
 |
Participating in trade fairs and
exhibitions abroad; |
 |
Disseminating international Marketing
Information; |
 |
Co-ordinating with
various Government agencies departments with regard to the export
promotion programme |
 |
Collecting cost-data
on garments and providing it to the Government for the fixation of
duty drawback and cash compensatory supports; |
 |
Advising Government on the export-import
policy in respect of Readymade Garments; |
 |
Advising Government on formulation
of the Entitlement Policy. |

| An exporter of garments
whether Manufacturer Exporter or Merchant Exporter or otherwise interested
in the actual export of garments may apply for registration as a registered
Exporter under these Regulations. A registered Exporter may also acquire
Membership of the Council under these Regulations, if so desired. |
