Chairman's word - October 2016

I congratulate the newly elected Executive Committee members of the Apparel Export Promotion Council. At the same time I would like to remind all of us of the enormous responsibilities we have been presented with by taking both, our exports and the AEPC to the next level. Time to put our shoulders behind the wheel! The last month has truly been very hectic, attending cluster meetings in Noida, Tirupur, Jaipur and Mumbai and discussing the finer points of the package announced by the Government of India. While these meetings were very meaningful, what I was delighted to see for the first time ever was the active participation of many young exporters asking pertinent questions pertaining to the Apparel trade at large, and the AEPC. Interacting with these young exporters, it dawned on me that there is immense untapped potential that we have in our inventory —talent which we have thus far, overlooked. Now all we need to do is to harness this abundant enthusiasm and energy in the right direction to help the youth become natural future leaders!
I have constituted a Gen-Next Sub Committee keeping this in mind. The combination of the government’s amazing package and our young entrepreneurs is perfect to propel our Apparel Exports to a mark way beyond the US$ 30 billion!
Recently, a two day seminar was organised by the International Apparel Federation (IAF has a membership of over 45 countries) and the Clothing Manufacturers Association of India, where I presented the ´India story´. Why should India be their preferred destination for imports? Because we not only manufacture garments, we manufacture happiness. We contribute to the creation of millions of livelihoods. Let´s spread the happiness far and wide. We have continuously been interacting with the Government to ensure that the GST in no way affects our drawback. As a matter of fact, we have retained the services of a leading consultancy firm to help us address our concerns.
On that note, on behalf of myself and the Apparel Export Promotion Council, I wish youand your families a very happy Dussehra and a bright and prosperous Deepawali!
Warmest Regards,
Ashok G Rajani
