Imports of Readymade Garments by LAC region & India’s share as supplier with Special Reference to Argentina

 Argentina is ranked as the 8th largest importer of RMG in the LAC Region with imports to the tune of 227.17 Million USD constituting 1.67% share in LAC Region.  RMG Constitute 0.43% share in Argentina’s global imports. Argentina’s imports of Ready-made garments showed a growth of 30.20% in Yr. 2005 over Yr. 2004. The table below depicts Argentina’s Imports of RMG during the last 3 years

 India’s Exports of RMG to Argentina & Argentina’s position in India’s Exports of RMG

In value terms, India’s Total Exports of RMG to the LAC Region in the year 2005-06 was to the tune of US$ 138.92 Million, which was US$ 104.41 Million in the year 2004-05.  India’s Exports to LAC Region during the last 10 years grew at a Compounded Annual Growth Rate of 7.01%.

 India’s exports to RMG to LAC Region constituted 1.61% share in India’s total exports of RMG in the year 2005-06 showing a growth of 33.05% over previous year when India’s exports to the Region was to the tune of US$ 8.85 Million. Argentina which ranked 4th position in India’s Exports to the LAC Region constituted  6.37% share in India’s total exports of RMG to LAC region and 0.10% share in India’s total exports of RMG in the year 2005-06 showing a tremendous growth of nearly 125.80% over the previous year when India’s total exports to Argentina was to the tune of US$ 3.92 Million.

 Figures in the tabulation below demonstrate the dominant share of RMG in Argentina’s Imports from India at over 3.16% of India’s total imports of nearly USD 201 Million to the country. That India’s exports of RMG showed a decline during a five year period is visible from a negative CAGR of 5.89%.  However, Argentina’s overall imports of RMG have also fallen which is duly visible from its declining CAGR of –14.01% over the last five years.  Though growth in Argentina’s imports of RMG recorded to the tune of 30% in the latest period under consideration, the Argentina’s RMG imports from India registered a tremendous growth of 160% in the latest year.

Latin American Countries like Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay constituted nearly 50% share in Argentina’s Imports of RMG though the growth in imports from these countries was less as compared to India.  Growth in case of China it was only 110% and in case of Hong Kong it was 177%.
