Readymade Garments are covered under HS Chapters 61 (Articles of Articles of apparel, accessories, knit or crochet) and 62 (Articles of apparel, accessories, not knit or crochet).  An analysis of trend in World Imports of  Readymade Garments – Knit Apparel and Woven Apparel has been provided in the ensuing.

 India’s Exports of RMG – knit and woven apparel amounted  2005-06 US$ 8.626 Billion and showing a growth of 31.22% over the previous year with a Compounded Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of  9.11% over the last 6 years period i.e. 2000-01 till 2005-06 when the total exports of RMG were worth US$ 5.577 Billion.  The RMG constituted 7.87% and 8.37% share in India’s total exports during the year 2004-05 & 2005-06 respectively.  

 As per provisional Figures available, India’s exports of RMG during the first quarter of year 2006-07 i.e. April –June, 2006-07 have shown a growth of  15.98% over the previous year period with a share of  7.99% in India’s total exports. 

 World Imports of  RMG  during the year 2005 was to the tune of US$ 266.67 Billion showing a growth of  3.55%  over the previous year  when the World Imports for product group was US$  257.53 Billion.   The CAGR growth in World Imports during the period 2001-2005 is 7.93% which is lower than the CAGR in India’s Exports.  These items constitute 2.61% share in Total World Imports during the year 2005.

 The top importing countries during the year 2005 remains almost the same expect for Belgium and Spain.  Belgium which was at 9^th position in the year 2004 has become 8^th largest importer in the year 2005 and  Spain which was at 8^th position in the year  2004 has came down to 9^th position in the year 2005.

 The top 5 exporters remains the same in the year 2005 however, Bangladesh which was at 10^th position in the year 2004 has become 6^th larges exporter of the product group in the year 2005.   Similarly India has gained its position from 9^th in the year 2004 to 7^th in the year 2005.   France, which was at 6th position in the year 2004, has come down to 8^th position in the year 2005.  Belgium has gained its ranking at 9^th position in the year 2005 wherein it was at 11^th position in the year 2004.   USA has lose its position by 2 no. since it was at 8^th position in the year 2004 has come down to 10^th position in the year 2005.

 Top importing countries of the world remain same in the year 2005 except for Belgium which was at 9^th position in the year 2004 and became 8^th largest importers of Woven Apparel in the year 2005 Netherlands which was at 10^th position has gained 9^th position in the year 2005.  Similarly Spain which was at 8^th position in the year 2004 has became 10^th largest importer of Woven apparel in the year 2005.
